May 27, 2022 - Calverton, NY, The Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts of America, proudly announces the annual Flag Placement at Calverton National Cemetery this Saturday, May 28th at 9:30am. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other community groups will work together to honor our nation’s heroes who are no longer with us.

“It’s a privilege for our Scouts to honor our service people and their spouses. We are passing on the lessons of our country to our young people,” explains Suffolk County Council President David Hunt. “We encourage our Scouts to read each gravestone and try to learn about the hero they are honoring. How old were they? What service were they a member of?”

This solemn tradition began in 1995. Of the more than 5000 volunteers who participate annually, close to 3000 are Scouts, BSA units and their families.

“It’s amazing to see how efficiently the groups accomplish the flag placement each year,” said a grateful Calverton Flag Placement Committee Chair Frank Bailey. “The entire cemetery of more than 285,000 graves is usually decorated in less than an hour.”

Flags remain in place for one week at Calverton. Scouts and other volunteers will return on Saturday, June 4th to collect the flags and package them for use next year.

“We chose Zandonai’s beautiful Giulietta e Romeo (a spinoff of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet) because it fits the architectural setting of the Wagner Pavilion and tells a story of eternal love - exactly the sentiment that many of us are in need of right now.” Executive and Artistic Director Stefanos Koroneos - Teatro Grattacielo

The opera was written by Italian composer Riccardo Zandonai (1883–1944) He caused quite a stir by placing emphasis on the female character with the title Giulietta e Romeo —not at all common in those days. All the classic elements of the ancient story made famous by Shakespere can also be found in Zandonai’s 1922 rendition: family rivalry, an ecstatic fight scene, the triumphant return, and of course, prohibited love between the illustrious Giulietta Capuleti and Romeo Montecchi embodied in the iconic balcony scene.

Known for its progressive and multimedia-based exploration of opera, Teatro Grattacielo’s use of technology and contemporary aesthetics will bring a whole new twist to the classic tale— a real treat for the senses! Crisp, saturated and dynamic projections of splashing waves, marbleized liquids, and dynamic close-ups will bring the Wagner Pavilion to life while acting as the scenic backdrop to the story. The color palette will be dominated by black with splashes of sultry color to contrast. In addition to Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt and 9 secondary characters, the composition will include a 30 piece orchestra and a 30 person double chorus representing the two opposing families: Montagues and Capulets.

We always remember who stepped up during the darkest days.”
